The port of Piraeus (Greek: Λιμάν του Πειραιά) is the main seaport of Athens, Greece, situated over the Saronic Gulf on the west coast of the Aegean Sea, the largest port in Greece and one of the largest in Europe.
This port served as the port of Athens since ancient times. Today, Piraeus Port is a leading employer in the region and is run by the Piraeus Port Authority S.A. (PPA).
With about 18.6 million passengers, Piraeus was Europe’s busiest passenger port in 2014. Since its privatization in 2009, the handling of port containers is growing rapidly. Piraeus handled 3.67 million TEUs in 2016 (2015: about 3.32 million. According to Lloyd’s list of the top 100 container ports in 2015, Piraeus ranked eighth in Europe and third in the Mediterranean. it is expected to become the Mediterranean’s busiest port in terms of container traffic by 2019.
